Decking paint generally comes out as the more durable and colourfast finish. Some paints last up to 10 years before requiring re-application. You should not use fence paint on decking because it will not be durable. Oil-based paints offer the best protection from moisture, whereas latex paints provide the best defence against UV-related fading.

It is possible to paint older decking, which already has an existing finish. You do not need to completely strip off all paint, but a good scuff sand is still recommended. This sanding will allow new deck paint to grab, hold to existing paint underneath much better.

We then recommend using one of our multi-surface paints such as Zinsser AllCoat Exterior Satin, which is a high performance, mould-resistant paint that offers supreme protection to all exterior surfaces including wood, metal, masonry, plastic, concrete and cladding. Once applied, it forms a vapour-permeable, low-maintenance, water-shedding coat that protects against rain and controls moisture. Plus, it is shower resistant after just an hour

Available in a wide choice of shades, Rustins Quick Dry Timberlife offers up to five years of protection. It can also be used on fences, sheds, furniture and, of course, decking. This decking paint is both water-repellent and has UV protection.

Boasting long-lasting protection, Rustins Garden Paint is a water-based garden paint that can be used on wood, metal, brick, terracotta and stone. It dries to a smooth satin finish and does not require any primer - even on metal.
